What is Plurality, and How Is It Related to Taiwan?
When Vitalik visited Taiwan last year to receive his Employment Gold Card, he discussed the importance of the “pluriverse” with Audrey Tang, Taiwan's Minister for Digital Affairs, and repeatedly referenced the development of Plurality. What exactly is Plurality, and why has this emerging field attracted such significant attention and investment from leading figures in Web3?
Plurality, translated as the pluriverse, is a new initiative co-proposed by Glen Weyl—the youngest professor in the Department of Economics at the University of Chicago and co-author of the influential book *Radical Markets*—and Audrey Tang. The project aims to create the largest international academic publishing collaboration in history.
Through global, online collaboration under CC0 (public domain) rules, contributors from governments, startups, NGOs, and civil society organizations worldwide will compile innovative ideas and Web3 technologies aimed at improving digital democracy, voting systems, economic models, and reducing inequality—offering a blueprint for the future.
In short, Plurality serves as a comprehensive handbook for the coming pluriversal era, leveraging blockchain technology and Web3 principles to address critical modern challenges such as AI risks, democratic resilience, wealth disparity, and market failures in public goods provision.
Notably, every language version of Plurality includes a dedicated chapter titled "Yushan Perspectives." Given Taiwan’s unique democratic development, strengths in tech and semiconductor industries, and its remarkable collaborative innovations during the pandemic, founding members like Vitalik, Glen, and Audrey have expressed high hopes for Taiwan’s contributions. They invite individuals with Taiwan experience to participate in editing and co-authoring Plurality, helping share Taiwan’s valuable pluriversal insights with the world.
What Are the Benefits for Contributors?
As mentioned above, Plurality operates without copyright restrictions—all contributions are made under CC0, meaning contributors do not receive royalties. However, anyone is free to print and distribute Plurality content or host events based on it for profit.
Due to Plurality’s unique structure, all contributors will be publicly acknowledged on the official list of co-authors. Should governments, the EU, or civil society organizations around the world seek to reference the book—or specifically the Yushan Perspectives chapter—they can easily identify and contact relevant contributors through the Plurality community. Thus, becoming a contributor offers a rare opportunity to build cross-national and even cross-governmental credibility and collaboration.
Given the Plurality community’s strong interest in Taiwan, contributions from Taiwanese participants are especially valued and anticipated.
How Can You Participate and Become a Plurality Contributor?
On January 19, TempoX will host a flagship event featuring both Vitalik and Glen: “From Sand to Island: How Can Taiwan’s Experience of Pluralistic Democracy Advance into the Web3 Era?” While select guests with experience in Taiwan’s collaborative culture will be invited, general participants and online viewers are also welcome to submit their responses via the questionnaire. All specific questions and feedback about Plurality will be personally reviewed by Vitalik and Glen, and some may even be addressed live during the event.
The questionnaire requires you to share your relevant experiences for contributing to Plurality, your reflections on the book’s content, and any questions you’d like to pose to Vitalik, Audrey Tang, Glen, or other members of the Plurality community.
For readers interested in becoming formal Plurality contributors, BlockTempo will continue releasing educational guides and updates on upcoming events, empowering people across Taiwan to help create a visible, impactful pluriverse for the world to see.
