TRON DAO has launched the TRON Policy Report (TPR) podcast, hosting informative conversations about the latest developments in cryptocurrency regulation. Andrew Hemingway, TRON DAO's Head of Policy, serves as host, providing insights and analysis alongside expert guests on recent news and trends in cryptocurrency policy.
Three episodes have been released so far, covering topics such as current legislative culture, regulatory demands facing the blockchain industry, and approaches to adding clarity and definition to existing laws in the cryptocurrency market. The first episode was released on February 15, 2023.
Episode One
In the first episode of TPR, Hemingway spoke with Ari Redbord of TRM Labs, a company specializing in digital asset compliance and risk management that monitors, detects, and investigates cryptocurrency fraud and financial crime. They discussed the future of cryptocurrency regulation, priorities of enforcement agencies, and the prevailing culture among current legislators.
Redbord highlighted the dilemma currently facing policymakers and regulators when he posed the question: "How do we ensure bad actors don't exploit this new financial system while still providing people with the privacy they need to transact in an increasingly open financial environment?"
Episode Two
In the second episode, Dr. Lisa Cameron joined TPR as guest. As a Member of the UK Parliament, Dr. Cameron represents three constituencies near Glasgow, Scotland—East Kilbride, Strathaven and Lesmahagow. She is a leader in the House of Commons and also chairs CryptoUK’s All-Party Parliamentary Group on Digital Assets, an industry trade body working directly with policymakers and market participants to shape balanced regulations.
“We are at the beginning of a new industrial revolution,” explained Dr. Cameron. She described how her role in cryptocurrency regulation emerged out of necessity, realizing that despite millions of people in the UK already participating in crypto, the topic had not yet entered parliamentary discussion. Dr. Cameron hopes to “build education within Parliament” to support informed decision-making on appropriate regulation. She warned that “these open dialogues and debates are crucial,” emphasizing the need to quickly understand the technology to move forward confidently in a rapidly changing world.
Episode Three
In the most recent episode, Hemingway welcomed Nick Anthony, a policy analyst at the Cato Center for Monetary and Financial Alternatives (CatoCMFA), a think tank project dedicated to identifying alternatives to failed monetary and financial systems. Anthony is also a researcher at the Human Rights Foundation (HRF).
Hemingway and Anthony discussed the current state of cryptocurrency regulation in the U.S. Congress and the challenges policymakers face due to biases toward the blockchain industry. Their conversation included ways to add clarity and definitions to existing laws in the cryptocurrency market, while acknowledging the difficulties inherent in the political process. Anthony pointed out, “One of the current challenges is that you want decision-makers to act quickly, but the faster they go, the more mistakes they make.” This tension leads to legislative inaction and leaves regulatory agencies operating relatively independently.
