According to draft reports and memorandums from the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy seen by The Wall Street Journal, the office is expected to release relevant documents on Tuesday, arguing that individual scientists can help the country apply artificial intelligence to scientific research faster. The guidelines issued by the office will affect the government's annual federal R&D budget of about $200 billion and will span the remainder of Trump's term.
The White House stated that the government hopes to prioritize support for projects aimed at individual researchers, such as research fellowships and award programs, rather than providing funding directly to universities. Demonstration projects approved by the White House include high-level programs for graduate students from the National Science Foundation (NSF), and funding programs for innovative scientists from the National Institutes of Health (NIH).
