TechFlow News, June 17: According to Semiconductor-Today, Coherent announced that it has signed a letter of intent with the U.S. Department of Commerce to receive up to $50 million in direct funding under the CHIPS and Science Act, supporting the expansion of advanced manufacturing capacity for AI photonic chips.
Coherent stated that this capacity expansion will strengthen the domestic U.S. photonic chip supply chain and support the high-speed data transmission requirements of AI computing infrastructure—alleviating communication bottlenecks arising from large-scale AI computation—and jointly advance photonic networking and interconnect technology upgrades for AI “data center factories” with NVIDIA. Previously, NVIDIA announced a $2 billion investment in Coherent.
