TechFlow News, April 5: According to Bloomberg, Indian AI startup Sarvam AI is nearing completion of a $300–350 million funding round aimed at building a homegrown AI company to compete with industry leaders.
Sources familiar with the matter said the company’s valuation in this round is approximately $1.5–1.55 billion, and the round is expected to close as early as next week. Bessemer Venture Partners is poised to lead the round, with participation from Nvidia, Amazon, and Prosperity7 Ventures. The sources requested anonymity as the discussions remain confidential.
Founded in 2023 by AI researchers Vivek Raghavan and Pratyush Kumar, Sarvam AI’s models are primarily operated via voice commands and support 22 Indian languages. The company believes this offers a significant competitive advantage in India—a country of 1.45 billion people—where the vast majority lack English literacy or typing proficiency. Its goal is to challenge companies such as OpenAI and Alphabet Inc., whose models often underperform when processing Indian languages.
