Vitalik Buterin's net worth is estimated to be at least $830 million, based on data from ARKHAM.
This article explores the net worth of Vitalik Buterin, co-founder of Ethereum, and how it has fluctuated over time. We examine his known cryptocurrency holdings and compare them with other top ETH holders and fellow Ethereum co-founders. Additionally, we consider potential non-cryptocurrency sources of wealth and provide context for their scale.
HOW DID VITALIK BUTERIN GET RICH?
Vitalik Buterin, co-founder of Ethereum, accumulated most of his known wealth through his role in creating the network. In 2011, at age 17, Buterin entered the cryptocurrency space by co-founding Bitcoin Magazine with Mihai Alisie (who later became one of Ethereum’s co-founders). While working on Bitcoin Magazine, Buterin and Alisie also developed Egora, a decentralized eBay for Bitcoin. Frustrated by Bitcoin’s limitations—such as its limited scripting language that restricted complex smart contracts and decentralized applications—Buterin published the Ethereum white paper in November 2013 (at just 19 years old), proposing Ethereum as an upgraded solution beyond Bitcoin.
In the months following the white paper’s release, Buterin connected with his co-founders. He initially collaborated with Anthony Di Iorio, Charles Hoskinson, Mihai Alisie, and Amir Chetrit. Joseph Lubin, Gavin Wood, and Jeffrey Wilcke soon joined, and together they established the Ethereum Foundation—a nonprofit organization dedicated to developing the Ethereum network. In June 2014, Buterin received a $100,000 grant from the Thiel Fellowship, allowing him to leave the University of Waterloo and focus full-time on Ethereum.
During the summer of 2014, Ethereum conducted a presale where participants bought ETH using BTC. The initial supply exceeded 72 million ETH, with 16.53% allocated to the founders. This allocation constitutes the majority of Buterin’s net worth.
Ethereum officially launched on July 30, 2015. Buterin is the only remaining founder actively involved in the network; all others have moved on to different projects. He has overseen the network’s evolution, including the pivotal transition from proof-of-work (PoW) to proof-of-stake (PoS) in 2022.
Most of Buterin’s known crypto wealth comes from the ETH he received during Ethereum’s launch. When ETH surpassed $3,000 in 2021, he briefly became a billionaire. Additionally, Buterin has invested in several crypto companies such as StarkNet (STRK), which has contributed to his overall net worth.
Born on January 31, 1994, in Kolomna, Russia, Buterin moved to Canada with his family at age six and later graduated from Abelard School, a private high school in Toronto. A gifted child, he has been subject to unverified online rumors claiming an IQ of 257—an implausible figure by any standard measure. Nonetheless, there is no doubt he is exceptionally intelligent, and this intellectual capacity has played a key role in his extraordinary success.
HOW RICH IS VITALIK BUTERIN? NET WORTH OVERVIEW
Vitalik Buterin’s known net worth is estimated at approximately $552.86 million (now $830 million). His actual net worth could be higher, as it may include undisclosed cryptocurrency holdings and non-crypto assets such as equity stakes in private investments.
In this section, we will explore his cryptocurrency holdings—including both ETH and non-ETH assets—as well as potential non-cryptocurrency wealth.
HOW MUCH CRYPTOCURRENCY DOES VITALIK BUTERIN OWN?
Currently, Vitalik Buterin’s known cryptocurrency holdings amount to $552.86 million. The vast majority of this stems from his ETH holdings, totaling approximately 246,730 tokens. These holdings can be estimated by analyzing his publicly known Ethereum wallet addresses. While this does not rule out the existence of undisclosed wallets, given the scale of his known holdings, they likely represent the bulk of his net worth.
We can view these holdings and their historical changes on Arkham’s profile page for Buterin:

VITALIK BUTERIN’S ETHEREUM HOLDINGS
According to a 2018 tweet, Buterin claimed he has never held more than about 0.9% of the total ETH supply.

To verify this claim, we analyzed his known ETH wallet balances from 2015 to present, examining his share of the total ETH supply over time. This data is accessible via the portfolio tab on Buterin’s Arkham profile.

Using this information, we estimated his annual percentage of total ETH supply. The table below shows his holdings as of December 31 each year, serving as a benchmark. His balance on December 8, 2023, is also included, representing his most recent known ETH holding.

Buterin’s statement appears accurate: his known ETH holdings have never significantly exceeded 0.9%. 2015 was the peak year, when he held 0.91% of total ETH supply. In fact, due to ongoing token sales and network inflation increasing the total ETH supply annually, his relative holding has decreased every year.
BUTERIN’S RANK AMONG ETH HOLDERS
To assess the significance of Buterin’s ETH holdings, we compare them with other top ETH holders. The largest ETH holders can be easily identified via Arkham’s Ethereum entity profile under “Top Holders.”

Who are the largest ETH holders?
The table below lists the top 20 ETH holders by entity as of this writing:

The ETH2 Deposit Contract leads with 34,259,215.29 ETH, as validators must deposit ETH into this contract to participate in consensus.
Coinbase and Binance rank second and third, respectively. Most entities above Buterin are exchanges like Kraken and Robinhood, or institutional managers like Grayscale, which hold large ETH amounts due to operational needs. Exchanges maintain ETH reserves to facilitate user withdrawals and trading, while Grayscale’s holdings reflect investment demand.
Buterin appears to be the primary individual holder with active access to his tokens. Rain Lohmus, who reportedly owns around 250,000 ETH purchased during the presale for $75,000, cannot access his funds due to lost private keys.
VITALIK BUTERIN’S CRYPTO NET WORTH OVER TIME
By reviewing Buterin’s portfolio history on Arkham, we can clearly observe the fluctuations in his known crypto holdings over the years. The table below records his known crypto value as of December 31 each year, serving as an annual benchmark. It also includes his estimated crypto net worth on November 18, 2021, when ETH briefly reached its peak price of $4,891—representing the highest point in his known net worth.

From December 31, 2015, to today, Buterin’s net worth has increased over 900-fold—from $596,760 to $552.86 million. His highest annual growth occurred between December 31, 2016 ($4.23 million) and December 31, 2017 ($278.37 million), coinciding with the 2017 bull market.
Buterin’s known crypto net worth is highly sensitive to ETH price movements, as ETH comprises over 99% of his portfolio. Thus, his net worth rises with ETH prices and falls during downturns.
In 2021, when ETH surpassed $3,000, Buterin became a billionaire at age 27, with known crypto wealth exceeding $1 billion. At the peak of the bull run on November 18, 2021, his net worth briefly hit $2.09 billion as ETH reached its all-time high of $4,891.
However, the crypto bear market returned, and ETH prices declined. By December 31, 2021, Buterin held $1.2 billion in ETH; by December 31, 2022, that had dropped to $300.58 million. Since then, his known crypto net worth has rebounded, reaching $550 million at the time of writing (with ETH priced at $2,234—now $3,395, making his total assets approximately $837.5 million).

Another factor influencing changes in his known crypto net worth is the apparent gradual reduction in his ETH holdings. Buterin has been observed transferring ETH to exchanges multiple times. For example, in May 2023, he sent 200 ETH to a crypto exchange, followed by the Ethereum Foundation selling 15,000 ETH. Notably, Buterin stated he has not sold ETH for personal gain since 2018. He clarified that transfers to exchanges were intended for donations, not personal profit.
NON-ETH CRYPTO HOLDINGS
Based on data from Arkham’s portfolio tracker, we can identify Buterin’s non-ETH holdings. As of this writing, his major non-ETH token positions include:
1. 869,500 KNCL tokens (from Kyber Network, a decentralized liquidity protocol where Buterin serves as advisor), valued at approximately $609,780.
2. 196.42 Wrapped Ether (WETH) tokens, worth about $436,920.
101 million THE tokens, valued at approximately $127,950.
While not major holdings, the following tokens are also noteworthy:
1. $1,290 worth of TORN tokens from Tornado.Cash. This aligns with Vitalik’s use of the controversial mixer. His Arkham profile shows multiple fund transfers via Tornado Cash, which he claims included donations to Ukraine.

2. 63.45 trillion Shiba Inu ($SHIB) tokens, worth $60.65 billion. In 2020, Buterin received 50% of the total SHIB supply directly from its developers, causing his known crypto net worth to temporarily surge to nearly $100 billion. This move aimed to generate massive hype by associating the token with one of crypto’s most prominent figures. Buterin subsequently burned over 90% of the received SHIB—410 trillion tokens—worth about $6 billion at the time. He then donated the remaining 50.69 trillion SHIB tokens to India’s CryptoRelief, valued at $1.56 billion.

NON-CRYPTO ASSETS
Buterin participated in the seed round of StarkWare, a zero-knowledge proof technology developer valued at $8 billion as of 2022.
Due to limited public data on his non-crypto assets, it is difficult to estimate their value or impact on his overall net worth. However, we can reasonably infer that if he still holds his investment in StarkWare, its appreciation would contribute to his net worth, along with any other undisclosed private investments.
OTHER ETHEREUM CO-FOUNDERS
Like Buterin, other Ethereum co-founders have also benefited financially from their ETH holdings. In this section, we compare Buterin’s estimated net worth with those of the other co-founders. For consistency, we treat his known crypto holdings of $552.86 million (now $800 million as of June 30, 2024) as representative of his total or majority net worth, given the lack of transparency around his non-crypto assets.
Below is a table of publicly estimated net worth for other co-founders (note: some 2023 estimates are unavailable, so figures reflect the latest known values, which may represent peaks or lows):

CONCLUSION
In summary, we have analyzed the composition and fluctuations of Vitalik Buterin’s net worth. His wealth—over $500 million (now $830 million due to price increases)—is primarily derived from his ETH holdings, which rise and fall with Ethereum’s market price. Stay tuned to his profile for real-time updates on Buterin’s financial standing.
