TechFlow News, April 27: Canada’s Bill C-25, the “Stronger Democracy Act,” passed second reading in Parliament and advanced to committee review. The bill proposes banning political contributions made in cryptocurrency. It classifies crypto assets alongside bank drafts and prepaid payment instruments as “hard-to-trace sources of funding,” applying this restriction to political parties, candidates, and third-party election advertising entities. Violating contributions must be refunded or remitted to the federal treasury within 30 days. Although Canada has permitted cryptocurrency donations since 2019, actual usage has been minimal. The United Kingdom has already implemented a similar ban, while the United States still permits cryptocurrency political donations.
