Interpreting Vitalik's Long-read: Why Smart People Should Stick to "Dumb Rules"?

Vitalik's article "Galaxy Brain Resistance", published a few weeks ago, is actually quite obscure and difficult to understand, and I haven't seen any good interpretations—so let me give it a try.

After all, even Karpathy, who coined the term "Vibe Coding", read this article and took notes, so there must be something special about it.

First, let's unpack what "Galaxy Brain" and "Resistance" mean in the title. Once you understand the title, you'll get the gist of the entire article.

1️⃣ "Galaxy Brain" literally translates to "Galaxy Brain" in Chinese, but it originates from an internet meme (meme), typically depicted as an image combining (🌌🧠) — you've definitely seen it.

Initially, it was positive, used to praise someone for having an exceptionally brilliant idea — in other words, being smart. But over time, as its usage became widespread, it gradually turned into a form of irony, roughly meaning "overthinking" or "logic stretched too far."

Vitalik uses 🌌🧠 here to specifically refer to the act of using high intelligence to perform mental gymnastics — forcing something illogical to appear profoundly meaningful. For example:

- Mass layoffs clearly done to save money, yet framed as "delivering highly qualified talent to society."

- Pumping and dumping worthless tokens while claiming it's "empowering the global economy through decentralized governance."

These are classic examples of "Galaxy Brain" thinking.

2️⃣ Then what does "Resistance" mean? This concept is easy to get confused about. In popular terms, it can be likened to "the ability to resist being led by the nose," or more simply, "bullshit resistance."

Thus, "Galaxy Brain Resistance" should be understood as Resistance to [becoming] Galaxy Brain — that is, "the ability to resist turning into absurd, overcomplicated reasoning."

Or more precisely, it describes how easily a certain argument or reasoning style can be abused to "justify any conclusion you desire."

This "resistance" can apply to a theory itself. For instance:

- A theory with low resistance: Slight manipulation easily turns it into wildly absurd "Galaxy Brain" logic.

- A theory with high resistance: No matter how hard you twist it, it remains intact and resists devolving into nonsense.

For example, Vitalik says his ideal social laws should have one red line: You can only ban an action if you can clearly explain how it causes harm or risk to specific individuals. This standard has strong Galaxy Brain resistance because it rejects vague, endlessly debatable justifications like "I personally dislike it" or "it offends public morals."

3️⃣ Vitalik also provides many examples in the article, even using familiar theories such as "long-termism" and "inevitabilism."

"Long-termism" is highly vulnerable to 🌌🧠-style thinking because it has extremely low resistance — it's practically a blank check. The reason? The "future" is too distant and too ambiguous.

- High-resistance statement: "This tree will grow 5 meters taller in 10 years." This is verifiable and hard to fabricate.

- Low-resistance long-termism: "Although I'm doing something extremely unethical now (e.g., eliminating a group of people or starting a war), it's for the sake of enabling humanity to live in a utopia 500 years from now. According to my calculations, the total future happiness is infinite, so present sacrifices are negligible."

See? As long as you stretch the timeline far enough, you can justify any immoral act today. As Vitalik puts it: "If your argument can justify anything, then it justifies nothing."

That said, Vitalik acknowledges that the long term *is* important; what he criticizes is using overly vague, unverifiable future benefits to override clear, present harms.

Another heavily affected area is "inevitabilism".

This is Silicon Valley and tech circles' favorite defense mechanism.

The rhetoric goes like this: "AI replacing human jobs is inevitable in history. Even if I don't do it, someone else will. So my aggressive AI development isn't for profit — I'm merely following the historical tide."

Where is the low resistance? It perfectly dissolves personal responsibility. If something is "inevitable", then I don't need to take responsibility for the damage I cause.

This is another classic case of Galaxy Brain: dressing up selfish desires — "I want money / I want power" — as "I'm fulfilling history's mission."

4️⃣ So what should we do when faced with these "smart people traps"?

Vitalik's proposed remedy is surprisingly simple — even somewhat "naive". He argues that the smarter you are, the more you need high-resistance rules to constrain yourself, preventing your intellectual acrobatics from going off the rails.

First, adhere to "deontological ethics" — kindergarten-level moral absolutes.

Stop calculating complex math problems about "the future of humanity." Return to rigid principles:

- Do not steal

- Do not kill innocent people

- Do not defraud others

- Respect others' freedom

These rules have extremely high resistance. They're black-and-white, non-negotiable. When you try to use grand "long-termist" justifications to explain why you're misappropriating user funds, the rigid rule "do not steal" slaps you back: stealing is stealing — no excuses about "great financial revolutions."

Second, maintain the right "positioning" — including physical location.

As the saying goes, "where you sit determines how you think." If you constantly stay within the echo chamber of Silicon Valley, surrounded by AI accelerationists, it's hard to stay clear-headed. Vitalik even offers a physically grounded high-resistance suggestion: don't live in the San Francisco Bay Area.

5️⃣ Summary

Vitalik’s article is essentially a warning to highly intelligent elites: don’t assume your high IQ allows you to bypass basic moral底线.

Those "Galaxy Brain" theories that claim to explain everything are often the most dangerous universal excuses. On the contrary, those seemingly rigid, dogmatic "high-resistance" rules are our final safeguard against self-deception.
