Devcon is coming—how should project founders build social influence?
Enjoy the process.

Last week, I flew to New York City to host a workshop for crypto founders.
The goal was to equip them with fundamental social skills they could implement immediately.
Below is a summary of my talk.
Why build social influence?
An active social presence can help you:
-
Increase sales
-
Attract talent
-
Build partnerships
-
Secure funding
-
Acquire users
-
Collect product feedback
-
Build community
When I was Head of Growth at my last startup, our public beta launch generated 1,000 downloads instantly—thanks to our online influence.
More details here.
I know people who’ve raised significant funds, built entire teams, and closed major partnerships—all through their online influence alone.
If you're still unsure whether it's worth it, consider this:
Chris Bakke:
"While running our last company, my personal Twitter account alone drove over $3 million in revenue between 2021–2022 (and I had far fewer followers back then)."

How do you manage social media while running a company?
You have limited time, endless tasks, and maybe content creation isn’t your strength.
Here are 5 tips to get started today:
Tip #1: Focus on one platform
Pick the platform where your target audience spends most of their time
Identify 10–20 creators who already have your ideal audience
Follow them and study their content
Turn on notifications for the top 5 accounts
Engage with their posts and commenters
Only expand to a second platform once you've mastered the first
Tip #2: Schedule dedicated creation time
Treat your online presence as part of your job
People follow individuals more readily than brands
Devote at least 10% of your time to this
Block out a few hours each week for focused content creation
Use Typefully or Bluecast to schedule next week’s content in advance
Spend time on community management every day
Tip #3: Use prompts and daily themes
Prompt examples:
"Explain your work in simple terms"
"Share how you came up with your product idea"
More prompts available here
Theme examples:
Monday – Thought leadership
Tuesday – Community highlights
Wednesday – Company updates
Thursday – Product marketing
Friday – Founder reflections
Tip #4: Leverage team support
-
If it feels hard, ask your team to help:
-
Interview you to uncover stories
-
Help edit and format your social content
-
Actively engage after your posts go live
-
-
Don't
-
Let someone else fully take over your account
-
Overthink it. Take action first, gather data, then optimize
-
Tip #5: Empower your employees
-
Treat employees as "internal KOLs"
-
Encourage them to share expertise online
-
Allow them to build their own audiences and represent the brand
-
Leverage employee networks to amplify company content
-
Create a Slack channel for company social posts to boost engagement
-
Foster a culture of positive online participation
Finally, I believe a successful founder's online presence should include:
-
Consistent, regular posting
-
Active engagement with the audience
-
Sharing knowledge in your domain
-
Not feeling like constant sales pitches
-
Sharing personal life (hobbies, interests)
-
Maintaining a light, humorous tone
-
Not treating social media purely as a promotional tool
-
Showcasing personality
Summary
-
Start with one social platform
-
Set aside dedicated weekly time for content creation
-
Use prompts and themes to overcome writer’s block
-
Leverage your team to uncover your stories
-
Encourage employees to build their own online presence
Bonus tip: Enjoy the process. It's social media.
